Victor’s Italian Cuisine restaurant demolished in Saugus

Two excavators tore through the building at 1639 Broadway on Wednesday, reducing it to rubble after the structure was declared an emergency, according to City Engineer Todd Baldwin.

A water main break occurred at the plot last week, Baldwin said, noting that the water was shut off at the curb with no running water to the building.

“Due to the fact that there were no functioning sprinklers, this was deemed an emergency and the demolition of the building,” Baldwin said.

The building at 1639 Broadway had been condemned in recent years following the closure of Victor’s Italian Cuisine.

Maddy’s Place, LLC plans to construct a mixed-use development on the 1639 Broadway property that includes 74 apartments, an Italian steakhouse and a rooftop bar/bistro.

In August, the Board of Selectmen voted unanimously in favor of a special permit allowing two buildings over 55 feet in height on the site.

Richard Magnan, attorney for Maddy’s Place, LLC, said plans called for one building to have 54 one-bedroom apartments, while the other building would have 20 one-bedroom apartments, an Italian steakhouse and a bar/bistro on the roof.

Maddy’s Place, LLC must still receive Master Plan and Site Plan approval from the Planning Board for development to proceed.
