The perfect family-run Italian restaurant for a quick pizza getaway
Daylight hours are short, the weather is colder, so you definitely can’t be blamed for not wanting to go out in the freezing rain.
Sometimes it’s much simpler, just pick up the phone and order a take-out meal. Tonight we’re craving pizza and as the stereotypes say, everyone knows Italians make the best.
In Rome, we prefer a pizza with a thin base, sometimes crispy, served by the slice. In Naples they take this very seriously of course, with the use of San Marzano tomatoes. However, all of Italy is united in one thing. Pineapple is a fruit, not a pizza topping.

Con Amici is located in the medieval town of Denbigh and is a family run modern Italian bar run by owner Joe Lynch and his son Ryan.
The name Con Amici comes from the Italian culinary philosophy which translates to eating with families and close friends, who come together to enjoy a meal around a table.
I hope I can extend this Italian philosophy to lounging on the sofa with a pizza in one hand and a remote control in the other?
Due to the recent pandemic, the take-out option in a modern restaurant is now the new normal. Some have proven so popular that many places have not only kept the pick-and-place option, but have expanded it as well.
Order takeaway pizza from Con Amici in Denbigh
The Con Amici menu offers ten different pizzas as well as more than eight pasta and risotto dishes. None of the stone-baked pizzas offer pineapple, but offer the choice of the basic margherita to the more complex flavors of pollo (chicken), which offers to blow you away due to the addition of chili flakes and jalapeno peppers.
Sides include hand-cut fries, arugula, garlic ciabatta bread, and a host of different garlic pizzas. The ordering process was quite simple and we were asked what time do we want our takeaway meal picked up?
We arrived a bit early, with the bright lights of the modern restaurant looking warm and inviting despite the dreadful weather. People less antisocial than us mingle inside with the sound of laughter filling the air.
As we were early we were asked if we wanted a drink or if we would prefer to have the pizzas delivered to our car.
All I had to do was open the foggy car window to receive the take-out boxes, a dark silhouette in the moonlight, which arrived right on time from the driver’s side.
“Big in flavors”
My wife sighs as I hum “when the moon hits your eye.” Like a big pizza, it’s amore’ as the rain beats down on the roof of the car!
My pizza of choice was the ‘Con Amici Special’ which seemed to have something for everyone in one pizza with its tomato, basil, mozzarella, grilled chicken, ham, pepperoni sausage and crispy pancetta toppings.
It was actually finished with a free-range egg, placed right in the middle, sunny side up, like some kind of crazy breakfast pizza. The base was thin, chewy in the middle, with a nice light crispy crust.
The pizza toppings were quite nice but maybe could have done with a bit more tomato paste on the base.
The garlic pizza was the highlight for me with the addition of caramelized red onions, mozzarella, goat cheese, arugula and pesto. It was rich in flavor and had the right consistency with the dry goat cheese perfectly highlighted by the garlic butter.
I ripped one of the large rectangular slices from the cardboard box and held it up. I then dropped the floppy pizza into my mouth, without any resistance.
It may not have been very elegant to watch, but with only my wife and the flickering television judging me, I was more than happy.
Hand-cut chips and mouth-watering desserts
My wife was also happy to share a portion of hand cut skin on fries. They were still warm in a foil container and were thick wedges of fried potatoes, which had a real homemade quality to them.
We didn’t order desserts but note that they have choices such as ‘Budino Di Cioccolato’ which was hot chocolate pudding with pistachio ice cream and ‘Tiramisu’ which offered sponge fingers light soaked in coffee liqueur with vanilla mascarpone and crushed amaretti biscuits at £6.25 each.
Both sounded bellissimo to my ears.
The restaurant obviously has a more extensive menu if you dine inside and is also very popular due to its cocktail bar and extensive drink options.
However, if you fancy a perfect Italian-style pizza, in front of the TV with a tall glass of red wine at your feet. Con Amici might have that simple family favorite waiting for you.
