Italian restaurant Chorley slams Tripadvisor review saying ‘diabolical’ portions ‘wouldn’t fill a child’

Owners of a popular Chorley restaurant have slammed claims on Tripadvisor that the portion sizes were ‘diabolical’ and ‘wouldn’t fill a child’. The family-run Papa Luigis on Wigan Road is generally a hit with locals – offering a range of Italian and European dishes.

But an out-of-towner took aim at the restaurant on Tripadvisor, saying the menu was “overpriced” and the portions left a lot to be desired. The restaurant claimed to have devoured its entire plate in as few as eight bites.

In response, the owner of Papa Luigis pledged to canvass his regular visitors to see if the kitchen should throw a few extra tubes of penne on their arrabiata.

Other visitors to the pizzeria generally rave about the quality of the food and the setting. The beloved little restaurant is currently rated four out of five on TripAdvisor.

It has received nearly 600 “Excellent” or “Very Good” reviews. One diner wrote on the review site: ‘Visited as a table of five for the Monday special, the food was delicious, good sized portions and a wide selection of choices. The picture does not do it justice!

“All the staff were friendly and caring with an amazing atmosphere. Nothing was too much trouble as half of our party changed the dishes and the manager Misi took care of that with no problem! Many thanks to Misi and her team because we will be back soon! Highly recommend!”

Another person commented: “We love this place so much and we were finally able to celebrate a 50th birthday party for 20 which we hadn’t been able to achieve until now due to Covid. Lots of free parking. A massive welcome Upon walking in. Our table was ready for us to sit down immediately.

“Entree. Every credit in the world for your mouth-watering soup. Main. I chose the lasagna. My husband did too. When the dish arrived, we thought it was for two people. We We were pleasantly surprised another one came in. Awesome. Mouth-watering!

“Deserts like this. Such a jewel in the crown! We had a wonderful time as we always have in the ten years we’ve been eating there.”

Despite rave reviews, not everyone left the restaurant satisfied, in fact one customer complained that the restaurant was a “total rip off”.

They wrote: “We had never been here before as we don’t live in this area. We drove here as it was someone who lives nearby’s birthday. Firstly, because of the distance, we wouldn’t stay here again anyway, however, if I lived around the corner, I still wouldn’t stay here.

“You know something is seriously wrong with your dining experience when the first thing you do when you get home is eat something! The portions given on the pasta meals were devilish and would not satiate a child. J I had literally eight bites and it was gone and took me about 8 minutes to eat it all.

“One of the cheapest ingredients for any restaurant is pasta, so I don’t understand why it’s necessary to try to save money by giving customers smaller than normal portions. Even though the more expensive items such as sausage and chicken (which was on my pasta) could stay the same amount but fill the bowl with pasta.

“There were 8 of us and the bill was £168 which, considering the size of the portions, was nothing short of a complete rip off.”

A few days later, the owners responded to the review and said, “Well, this one is different. The family has owned dads for 28 years and we’ve never had a complaint about portion sizes. To satisfy myself, I will put on Facebook a request for help to all our customers to let them know if our portions are satisfactory.”
