San Remo has been barricaded since last March.

The San Remo at Nether Hall Road was barricaded during the coronavirus lockdown – but could not reopen once pandemic restrictions were relaxed.

Speculation was rife about the restaurant’s future – and flamboyant owner Nino Romero confirmed the Italian restaurant will not reopen in an emotional Facebook post.

He wrote: “It’s about time I made this long overdue post.

“I didn’t know how to say it or what to say, but I have to announce that, unfortunately, we now know that after 38 beautiful long years, we are not going to reopen as a Sanremo restaurant.

“We closed in March 2020 for the first lockdown and now I would like to thank all of our customers and friends who have supported me over the years a big and heartfelt thank you.

“I will miss you, all of you beautiful people who have come and befriended me and all of our staff.

“I’m going to miss all the birthdays and anniversaries with the karaoke and the laughs we’ve had over the long years.

“I also like to thank all of our staff who worked hard to make us function, especially Yami, Bekim, Conner, Danny, Angel, Ali and Martin – they were not only staff but good friends too and they have also been appreciated by all our customers.

“I wish you all my warm and sincere best wishes for the future.

“I also apologize to the hundreds of clients / friends who sent me private messages asking me what was going on or how I was doing and when we were going to reopen which I did not respond to because I did not know not myself at the time what was going or I did not know what to say.

The restaurant, which opened in 1982, was known for its party atmosphere, with guests invited to dress up and play musical instruments at the end of their meals.

Mr Romero has now asked anyone with videos and photos of their restaurant visits to share them on the Sanremo Facebook page.
