Gigi and Mario serve pizza and Italian cuisine in Edgewater
VShef Mathieu Palombino opened his latest pizza and Italian food business, Gigi and Mario, in Edgewater. The restaurant serves carefully prepared pizzas and other Italian delicacies. With a menu made from scratch and a Neapolitan Acunto brick oven for making pizzas, there’s something for everyone.
The 1,300 square foot Gigi and Mario has an open pizza station surrounded by large, comfortable cabins. Chef Mathieu says âThe warm colors and natural wood create a warm and relaxed atmosphereâ inside. Meanwhile, there is a beer garden on the sidewalk; with seasonal seating offering views of the Hudson River and New York City skyline. âIt’s a great place to stop for a cappuccino and dessert after shopping; even if you don’t stay for a pizza, âhe adds.

Gigi and Mario offers an Italian-American menu with a range of options. âI’m an old-school European chef and I do things the way I always have,â says Chef Mathieu. âEverything is done by hand from scratch. We grate parmesan and pecorino balls, we peel the clams by hand; our desserts are handmade by a pastry chef, we make dressings from premium oils and vinegar.
Of course, Gigi and Mario’s main attraction is their 16 inch large share pizza. Luckily for Chef Mathieu, the previous company left behind its handcrafted Neapolitan brick oven Acunto. In fact, âthat’s what caught my attention here,â admits Chef Mathieu. âThis is the oven I use in all my pizzerias. Click here to see the full menu.
Their pizza uses a ripe dough made from a mixture of American flours; as well as a base of Californian tomatoes and fresh, local mozzarella. Pie specialties include spicy sopressata and, Chef Mathieu’s favorite, Pugliese pizza; a burrata base with broccoli rabe, sweet Italian sausage and fresh chili peppers. âMy father is from Puglia and that is close to my heart,â he says. Gigi and Mario also offers custom pies, where customers choose a red or white base in addition to the fresh toppings.
Italian classics and American favorites
Other Italian and American dishes on the menu include squid, grilled artichokes, and grilled octopus. The breaded and fried burrata ball served on a marinara sauce with parmesan shavings, for example, is a current success. Likewise, Gigi and Mario make a cheeseburger topped with smoked bacon, caramelized onions, Russian dressing, salsa verde and cheddar cheese.
Meanwhile, the dessert menu offers Italian classics such as cheesecake, lemon torta or Belgian chocolate fondue for the table; the latter is also served with fresh fruit and ricotta fritters.
Gigi and Mario also plan to serve an all-American weekend brunch soon. This brunch will include French toast, waffles, pancakes, toasted sandwiches, large breakfast platters and burgers; in addition to toppings such as bananas, pecans and bacon.
